Cathryn Jones

Prinicipal Oboe

Cathryn Jones' love for music blossomed after listening to a flautist's performance at her elementary school, which led her to inquire about music lessons. Once introduced to the oboe by a family of musicians, she never looked back. After more than two decades of being immersed in the music world, Cathryn is now regarded for her rich, evocative, and almost European sound. Currently, Cathryn performs the oboe and English horn with multiple groups in New York and currently holds the principal oboist position in the Catskill Symphony and Clinton Symphony. She also subs with groups such as the Albany Symphony and Binghamton Philharmonic. She also teaches in and around the Albany region, coaching and performing for younger students in local schools to encourage them to stay involved in music programs.

Cathryn's orchestral repertoire and love for ensemble playing were expanded through early performances with the Tampa Bay Youth Organization and Empire State Youth Orchestra. These ensembles have given her the opportunity to perform at notable venues such as Carnegie Hall, Seiji Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood, and The Troy Saving Bank Music Hall. Cathryn has since worked with renowned conductors such as Benjamin Zander, George Manahan, David Gilbert, and Steven Osgood. She has also played principal oboe for a performance of John Corigliano's opera The Ghosts of Versailles at the Manhattan School of Music.

In addition to her orchestral work, Cathryn has a passion for chamber music. She has performed at the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) with the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Woodwind Quintet, including a performance of the Carl Nielsen quintet on English horn, which encouraged her to pursue chamber music further. She was also the winner of the Lillian Fuch's Chamber Music Competition in 2012 at the Manhattan School of Music for a performance of the Paul Hindemith Kleine Kammermusik for wind quintet.

Cathryn Jones has studied under the tutelage of Robert Botti, Thomas Stacy, Randall Ellis, Kathryn Hernandez, and Laurie Jalbert. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree for Oboe performance at the Manhattan School of Music in 2015. During her free time, Cathryn enjoys taking pictures to capture life's other beautiful art forms.
